What are articles and how do they increase website traffic?

Articles are short 500 to 1000 word pieces, written by anybody, usually about a very specific topic.

Webmasters write articles to increase traffic to their websites from:

  1. People clicking links included in the article.

A major source of traffic originates from the bottom of an article where there is a resource box containing the authors name and bylines, which will include a link to their website.

  2. People are free to publish these articles in any medium they choose as long as the resource box containing the authors name and bylines remains intact.

These articles are often submitted to article directories which ezine publishers visit when searching for content.

  3. Search engine traffic.

Because articles are very tightly themed and often contain popular keywords and phrases, search engines tend to index them favorably.

How do you use articles to increase website traffic?

There are two ways to accomplish this:

1. Write your own articles and submit them to the article directories and archives.

The thought of writing an article can be quite daunting to the beginner, but it's quite easy if you know your stuff. The only time it gets a bit complicated is when you try to write the article in HTML.

The extra work is worth it though. When you write articles and code them in HTML, you have a major advantage in that you can include your keyword or phrase in the link text as well as the link URL.

In text articles on the other hand, you can only include your keyword or phrase into the URL.

No matter what format you choose, try to use the same keyword or phrase throughout the article text as you have used throughout the text of the webpage that the links within the article point to.

The search engines are pretty good at deciding the theme of your webpage, so if the theme of your article is the same as the theme of the webpage that it links to, the search engines will count the link as highly relevant.

5 Critical Promotion Mistakes People Make With Articles

Did you realize that writing and publishing articles online represents one of the best-kept website traffic secrets?

It's true! In fact, if you learn some basic principles, you can drive thousands of visitors to your website without spending any money on advertising.

But, beware! My experience as a syndicated newspaper columnist has shown me that people who would otherwise succeed massively promoting with articles actually fail because they consistently make one or more of these five critical mistakes!

Mistake #1 - NOT Defining Your Target Audience

Many article authors make the serious mistake of not clearly defining a niche audience before writing their article. Successful article authors always know the exact "niche" audience they want to reach before they write the first word.

When targeting your audience, remember this rule: Narrow and Deep! Always pick an audience with a specific, pressing, or major interest in a narrow topic!

Mistake #2 - Spamming Ezine Editors

In their desire to cover as much ground as possible, many article authors resort to spam techniques for submitting their articles. Instead of tightly targeting appropriate ezines that cater specifically to their audience, these authors try to hit "everyone."

By trying to save time, they actually waste every minute spent writing their article because most ezine editors will just delete their submissions as spam!

Mistake #3 - Milktoast Topics

You can write the best article in the world, but if your headline doesn't grab a reader's eyeballs and pull them into your article - you lose!

Article authors should spend at least half as much time writing the headline as they spend writing their actual article.

In fact, an "average" article can get superior results simply from having a great headline at the beginning.

Mistake #4 - "What's In It For Me"

If they manage to make it past the first 3 pitfalls, many article authors trip on their shoelaces at this stage of the process! Don't write about what you want to write about, only write on topics of high interest to your target audience.

In other words, give them exactly what they want and they will love you. Nobody cares how much of an expert you rate on a particular topic until they know you can deliver information they need in a way they can use - now!

Mistake #5 - "No Shoe Polish"

You could write an article worthy of the front page of the Wall Street Journal, but as soon as somebody spots a typo or misspelling, they immediately put your article lower than a Sunday sales circular.

Seriously, if you want to undermine all the good you can do with a great article, send it out without proper spell- checking!

No matter what product or service you sell, once you understand the promotion power of free articles, you'll never look at website traffic generation the same way.

But remember, if you abuse the power, spam ezine editors, or blatantly pitch people instead of providing real information, you might as well skip the whole process altogether.

2. Incorporate articles into your website.

There are two ways of incorporating articles into your website:

1. You could use the articles as content.

If you do not have enough personal knowledge about a subject, you could find articles written by people who do and publish these articles in your website.

You would not have much control over keywords and you would have to get permission from the authors to reproduce their articles in your website.

You would have the advantage of being able to use your own affiliate links in the articles and most authors would encourage you to do so.

2. You could incorporate an article directory into your website.

Incorporating an article directory into your website is another great way to increase traffic from:

  • People who have bookmarked your article directory as a source of interesting information.
  • Ezine publishers who have added your website to their favorites as an additional source of content for their ezines.
  • Webmasters who have linked to your article directory from their websites.

In fact, the majority of traffic you will receive to your ezine directory will be from these three sources.

You will receive some traffic from search engines, but the amount of traffic will depend on how you build your article directory.

The key is to make your article directory so that it is easy for visitors to find articles based on their content or theme.

It is pointless to file articles alphabetically or by author as most people look for information by topic or theme, only rarely are they concerned who wrote the article.

Be sure to make the list of articles for each topic or theme a separate page and choose your keywords and linking text carefully.
